Gerald's Little Gym - Duncan's First Nation, AB

Project type

Gym Revitalization

Date

2019

Location

Duncan's First Nation

Role

Wellness Coordinator

As Wellness Coordinator, I was tasked with revitalizing our Nation’s community gym with a $50,000 budget. More than just a physical renovation, this project became a celebration of wellness, legacy, and collective care.

The transformation honoured Gerald, a former gym attendant and community advocate, and was shaped through inclusive, grassroots input every step of the way.

Key Responsibilities:

Developed and managed a $50,000 renovation budget.
Hired and supervised local tradespeople.

Facilitated community engagement, including:
A naming contest.
A community vote on the final name.
Collecting input on equipment from regular gym users.

Procured new equipment for multi-generational use.

Oversaw the creation of the gym's branding and signage, including:

A logo designed by my young son, who left a post-it sketch on my desk that ended up inspiring the final design—grounding the project in family, youth creativity, and heart.

Community Impact:

Created a welcoming, functional wellness space for all ages.
Rebuilt the gym around honour, inclusion, and legacy.
Encouraged community pride and ownership.
Inspired youth involvement, showing that even a child’s contribution can shape something lasting.

Skills Demonstrated:

Budget Management
Community-Led Program Development
Contractor & Vendor Coordination
Youth Engagement & Creative Collaboration
Legacy Building & Cultural Recognition
